SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) and On-Site Medical Services
A SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) nurse is a highly trained healthcare professional who provides specialized medical care and forensic evidence collection to individuals who have experienced sexual assault or abuse. In the context of the CAC, the SANE nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to child victims of sexual abuse.
Specifically, our SANE nurse at the Children's Advocacy Center may perform the following tasks:
1. Conduct medical exams: the SANE nurse performs a thorough medical exam of the child, which includes a physical assessment, evaluation of the child's injuries, and testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
2. Collect forensic evidence: the SANE nurse collects forensic evidence from the child's body, clothing, and other objects that may have been involved in the abuse. The evidence collected can be used in legal proceedings.
3. Document findings: the nurse documents any injuries or other findings from the exam in a medical report, which may be used as evidence in court.
4. Provide follow-up care: the SANE nurse may provide follow-up medical care, including additional testing or treatment, referrals to other healthcare providers, and ongoing support and counseling for the child and their family.
5. Work with other professionals: the SANE nurse collaborates with law enforcement, child protective services, and other professionals involved in the child's case to ensure that the child receives appropriate care and support.
In short, our SANE nurse is an integral part of the multidisciplinary team at the Children's Advocacy Center and plays a critical role in ensuring that child victims of sexual abuse receive the medical care and support they need.
